'Occupy the Square', a protest against the eviction of couples from the Independence Square by security guards, was held today at the Independence Square. Deputy Minister Dr. Harsha de Silva also arrived at the protest event. He argued with the security officials that they could not interpret the laws passed by the Parliament. As per the existing rules, they cannot evict couples from public places merely for holding hands, Dr. De Silva said.

 

President Maithripala Sirisena visited the Abhayaramaya in Narahenpita today for the 78th anniversary of the Buddhist religious school at the temple. The child in Kuliyapitiya who was denied a school due to false rumors of HIV/AIDS drew considerable media and social media attention, not only because of the individual case, but because of the pathetic situation of the general health education among Sri Lankans. While the government is unable to safeguard the right for him to study, several private schools have come forward to give him a place in their schools. He will study, irrespective of the government bureaucracy which is incompetent in this case. (Pic BBC)
