The Government Medical Officers' Association yesterday alleged that the recent news story on an alleged kidney racket was an 'Indian conspiracy' against the Sri Lankan medical sector.

Speaking to the media, GMOA Secretary Dr. Nalinda Herath said that the Indian media stations have publicized six names of doctors alleging they are involved, without giving any details.

He claimed that the Indian government was particularly displeased with the GMOA because it opposed the inclusion of medical profession in the proposed CEPA agreement.

Dr. Herath also said that the fact that Indian patients come to Sri Lanka for kidney transplants has disturbed the Indians. They want Sri Lankan medical professionals to be discredited, he alleged.

He also pointed out that the Sri Lankan Ministry of Health and other authorities could take action if there was any involvement of Sri Lankan doctors in this alleged racket. However, the GMOA will not let India have its way with Sri Lankan doctors, Dr. Herath warned.
