An internal rift within the National Democratic Front (NDF) has deepened following the nomination of Ravi Karunanayake for one of the two National List MP seats the party secured in the General Election. Other parties within the alliance have expressed they were unaware of the nomination and did not approve it.
The National Unity Front (NUF), a key party in the alliance, has announced plans to take legal action against the decision, which they claim was made arbitrarily by the NDF General Secretary. In a letter to the Chairman of the Election Commission, NUF Leader Azath Salley stated that the NDF General Secretary's decision to nominate Karunanayake was illegal, as it had not been discussed with the other parties in the alliance.
Eariler, the UNP also said that they too were not aware of Karunanayake's appointment.
The NDF General Secretary has sent a letter to the Election Commission today (18), naming Karunanayake as the party's National List MP. The letter also stated that the other nominee will be informed to the Election Commission shortly.
The NDF is officially registered under Ravi Karunanayake's name.
