Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has decided to make a special statement today on the drafting of a new constitution.
This comes in the backdrop of heavy criticism he is facing from several parties on the mechanism he suggested for the drafting.
The Prime Minister proposed that the Parliament should be made a Constitutional Assembly. However, the JVP and the 'Joint Opposition' opposed this move, pointing out that drafting a constitution should be done through a Parliamentary Select Committee.
Meanwhile, Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said that the SLFP was in support of the Parliamentary Select Committee.
