Committee To Be Appointed To Return Lands In North To Owners

February 08, 2015

State Minister of Defence Ruwan Wijewardene stated that a committee will be appointed by presidential orders to look into the plight of those who have lost their lands in the north.

He made this statement to BBC Sandeshaya at Vavuniya yesterday after meeting with the military in Vavuniya Defense Forces Headquarters. He added that the matter will be resolved after talking to all parties involved including the defense forces and the people in the north.

Speaking to the armed forces, he said that there will be no need to remove military camps in north and east. The personnel will not be reduced either, the minister assured.

Wijewardene said that the people in the north voted for Maithripala Sirisena in the recent presidential election with a desire to see their problems solved. The government has an obligation towards them, he added.
