Software Engineer Arrested with Drugs Worth Rs. 5 Million Smuggled from Italy


Police apprehended a Software Engineer in possession of various narcotics, including Hash and Kush Cannabis, believed to have been smuggled into Sri Lanka from Italy. Acting on a tip-off received by the Sri Lanka Army Intelligence Division, the Western Province – South Crimes Unit conducted the operation, seizing drugs valued at approximately Rs. 5 million at Wijerama Junction in Nugegoda.

Alongside the narcotics, authorities confiscated Rs. 100,000 in cash, two iPhones, and a motorcycle used in trafficking activities. Preliminary investigations indicate the drugs were smuggled from Italy. The arrested individual, a 23-year-old Ragama resident holding a Software Engineering degree, was reportedly planning to migrate to Australia for employment.
The suspect has been handed over to Mirihana Police for further legal proceedings, scheduled to appear before Nugegoda Magistrate’s Court today (29).
Additionally, authorities disclosed information pointing to a Kadawatha resident as the alleged mastermind behind the drug smuggling network, prompting an ongoing investigation to apprehend them.
