The government should investigate the unresolved assassinations and disappearances that happened during the previous regime if it was sincere in establishing democracy in the country, Frontline Socialist Party Propaganda Secretary Pubudu Jayagoda said.
Speaking at a media briefing yesterday, he stated that the government should take steps to investigate incidents such as the murder of Lasantha Wickremetunge, shooting at Rathupaswala, killing of Roshen Chanaka at Katunayake and various disappearances including that of Prageeth Eknaligoda that took place during the former government’s tenure.
Meanwhile, he also said that the constitutional amendments that are proposed should involve the active participation of the people in a “People’s Constitutional Assembly.” He added that the 100 Days Program was proposing a constitutional reform through the parliament. However, if it needs to be democratic, people’s involvement is essential, Jayagoda stressed.
If the government was sincere in its commitment to ensure democracy, it should repeal legislation such as the Prevention of Terrorism Act, Jayagoda also argued.
