The Container Transport Owners Association expresses concern over the ongoing difficulties faced by transporters as heavy traffic jams have occurred around the Colombo port due to the actions of the customs officials.
Sanath Manjula, president of the association, explained that due to security in areas like Orugudawatta, Thotalanga, Grandpass, containers were previously detained for clearance in the port. However, following an observation by the minister recently, the authorities decided to remove the containers from the port, resulting in traffic jams especially in the above mentioned areas.
Manjula criticized the move, saying it had put both drivers and containers at risk, and some areas now threatened their safety. "We have informed the Inspector General of Police and the Director General of Customs, but our trucks are being sent out under unsafe conditions," he added.
Transporters expressed frustration with some drivers stuck for up to three days due to the prevailing situation. "This feels like an act of revenge, we are helpless. We have no food or water," shared one driver. They also highlighted security risks in the areas, citing theft and drug addiction.
In response, Amila Sanjeeva, president of the Customs Officers Association, said that her members are working within the legal framework by following the provisions of the Customs Ordinance Act.
