The Sri Lanka Bar Association (BASL) demanded Chief Justice Mohan Peiris to step down from his position immediately.
The BASL has made the demand after a 'snap meeting' of it's Executive Committee which was held yesterday (16) evening.
Speaking to media after the meeting, BASL Chairman Upul Jayasooriya said the association made a unanimous decision to demand the immediate resignation of the Chief Justice. He said that the decision was taken because of Mohan Peiris's involvement in the alleged attempt to tamper with the Election results on January (9).
"We have received proof that Chief Justice Mohan Peiris together with former President Rajapaksa were involved in a plot to 'change' the Presidential Election results on January 9", Jayasooriya said.
However, Jayasooriya said that the Bar Association earlier given opportunity Mohan Peiris to come forth with a 'proper explanation' regarding the allegations, but he has failed to do so.
"Hence he should resign from his position immediately, he is not suitable to hold such an esteemed position ", he added.
Jayasooriya sternly maintained that BASL will take legal measures against the Chief Justice if he does not comply with their demands.
