President Ranil Explores Tourism Opportunities on Pekoe Trail

President Ranil Wickremesinghe embarked on a visit to Court Lodge Estate in Nuwara Eliya this morning to delve into opportunities for revitalizing the tourism industry around the scenic hills of Nuwara Eliya. The President's journey included traversing the Pekoe Trail, spanning over 300 km through Sri Lanka's Central Highlands, a route revered as one of Asia's hidden gems. Originally constructed during the British colonial period for tea transportation, the trail now holds historical significance and potential for tourism development.

During his walk along a segment of the Pekoe Trail, President Wickremesinghe engaged with workers at the Court Lodge estate, discussing their livelihoods and aspirations. He also personally inspected the estate's facilities and addressed issues related to education, healthcare, and housing for the workers and their families. The President emphasized the importance of leveraging the Pekoe Trail to enhance tourism in the region, including offering visitors the chance to experience freshly brewed tea.

The visionary behind the Pekoe Trail project, Mr. Miguel Cunat, expressed optimism about Sri Lanka becoming a premier hiking destination globally. Supported by the European Union and the United States Agency for International Development, the initiative aims to bolster sustainable tourism and improve rural livelihoods. Plans are underway to develop the trail further, providing necessary facilities for visitors and showcasing the region's diverse terrains, history, culture, and cuisine.

President Wickremesinghe's visit underscores the government's commitment to revitalizing Sri Lanka's economy through tourism development, aligning with national strategies. The Pekoe Trail project not only seeks to attract adventure seekers but also to uplift rural communities, reflecting a holistic approach to sustainable tourism and economic growth.
