Heavy Rainfall Expected in Western Province and Other Areas

The Department of Meteorology has issued a weather advisory predicting significant rainfall across Sri Lanka, particularly in the Western Province and several other regions. Showers or thundershowers are expected in the Eastern and Uva provinces as well as the Hambantota District.

After 1.00 p.m., showers or thundershowers are forecasted in most areas of the island. In particular, heavy showers exceeding 100 mm are likely in parts of the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as in the Galle and Matara districts.

Additionally, misty conditions are expected in various areas during the morning, including parts of the Western, Central, Sabaragamuwa, and Uva provinces, as well as the Galle and Matara districts.

Residents are advised to take necessary precautions to minimize potential damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Furthermore, the Department of Meteorology noted that the sun will be directly over specific latitudes of Sri Lanka from April 5 to April 15, with today's overhead areas including Vanchiyankulam, Omanthai, Eramadu, and Thiriyai around noon.

Regarding sea conditions, showers will occur at times in sea areas off the coast from Trincomalee to Hambantota via Batticaloa. Additionally, showers or thundershowers are expected in several sea areas extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle in the evening or night.

Winds are predicted to be easterly or variable in direction with speeds ranging from 15-30 kmph, though they may increase up to 40-45 kmph at times in certain sea areas, particularly off the coasts from Puttalam to Trincomalee via Mannar and Kankesanturai.

The sea areas off the coasts from Puttalam to Trincomalee via Mannar and Kankesanturai are expected to be fairly rough, with temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas anticipated during thundershowers.
