Postal services will remain operational on 12 April, despite it being a public holiday, as postal workers gear up to manage the influx of parcels received for the Sinhala and Tamil New Year season.
This unprecedented move comes as the Central Mail Exchange braces for an unprecedented surge in demand. State Minister for Mass Media, Shantha Bandara, highlighted the decision made to accommodate the significant volume of goods, particularly those sent by individuals living abroad to their loved ones in Sri Lanka.
Bandara emphasized the unanimous agreement among postal employees, including the Postmaster General and postal trade unions, to work on the public holiday to ensure timely delivery.
Officials from the Department of Customs have also pledged support to streamline the clearance process for incoming parcels.
Shantha Bandara further noted a shift in consumer behavior, attributing it to the success of government-led initiatives, with individuals now focusing on purchasing apparels and other goods during this festive period.
