Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon has called for heightened security measures ahead of the Ramadan festival and Sinhala and Hindu New Year celebrations.
Addressing a gathering at the Minister's Security Division, the IGP underscored the global threat of extremist terrorist attacks and emphasized the importance of prioritizing VIP security and national security."Extremist and terrorist attacks occur worldwide often unexpectedly. This underscores the necessity of vigilance," the IGP stated.
He also warned against individuals attempting to exploit political, religious, and cultural sentiments to incite public unrest.In preparation for the upcoming festivities, the IGP emphasized the need for special attention to security, acknowledging the potential for incidents, albeit not on the scale of previous attacks. He stressed the importance of addressing social issues such as extremism and terrorism.The police have already implemented special security measures for mosques during Ramadan, with over 7,500 security personnel involved.
Additionally, a comprehensive security plan involving the Police, Special Task Force (STF), and tri-forces has been put in place for the Ramadan festival on April 11. This plan was developed after consultations with mosque leaders across police divisions.A total of 5,580 police officers, 510 STF officers, and 1,260 tri-forces personnel have been deployed at 2,453 mosques across the island where religious services are held, ensuring the safety and security of worshippers during this important period.
