Under the patronage of President Ranil Wickremesinghe, a significant step was taken on Thursday (28) with the launch of an online platform aimed at swiftly addressing instances of child sexual abuse circulating on the internet.
The initiative, hosted at the Presidential Secretariat, targets the dissemination of explicit content involving children across websites and social media platforms.Implemented by the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) in collaboration with the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), renowned for its expertise in internet child safety enforcement, the program is financially supported by Save the Children and Child Fund.
Through this online system, individuals can report incidents of indecent photos and videos of children exchanged online via the NCPA website.President Wickremesinghe emphasized the urgency of addressing this long-neglected issue, acknowledging the need for both short-term interventions and long-term structural changes. He proposed the establishment of a Children’s Council and advocated for devolving the management of probation and child care services to the provinces. For reporting incidents or seeking further information, individuals are directed to contact the Law Enforcement Division at 011-2778911 extension (269) or visit www.childprotection.gov.lk.
