The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) is gearing up to contest petitions challenging its decision to hike electricity tariffs by 18% last September.
Despite facing two prior increases in the past year, petitioners are questioning the legality of this latest raise. The case was heard by a three-member Supreme Court bench, including Justices Preethi Padman Surasena, Janak De Silva, and Mahinda Samayawardena. Among the petitioners are Janaka Ratnayake, former chairman of the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka, Bandara Ilangakoon, chairman of the Electricity and Renewable Energy Association, and its secretary.
The respondents include key figures such as the Minister of Power and Energy, the Secretary of the Ministry, and the current Chairman of the Public Utilities Commission. Petitioners argue that the CEB's tariff hikes violate existing laws and question the legality of the Public Utilities Commission's approval. They seek a judgment safeguarding their fundamental rights and revoking the tariff increase decision.
