The Indian Government has pledged a grant of USD 61.5 million to facilitate the comprehensive development of the Kankesanthurai (KKS) Port in Sri Lanka. This announcement emerged from a recent meeting between Sri Lanka's Ports, Shipping, and Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva and Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Santosh Jha.
The ambitious project entails the construction of a new breakwater and dredging the port to a depth of 30 meters, enabling the accommodation of deep-draft vessels.
High Commissioner Jha emphasized India's commitment to fostering regional cooperation and expressed a dedication to bolstering tourism ties between the two nations, designating Sri Lanka as a premier destination for Indian travelers.
Minister de Silva extended gratitude for Indian support in aviation and shipping sectors, particularly applauding the initiation of flights connecting Chennai and Jaffna. He outlined plans for a new terminal at the KKS port, costing Rs. 600 million, tailored to enhance the experience of Indian tourists, whose visits to Sri Lanka have seen a notable uptick in recent months.
