The Meteorology Department has issued a warning indicating the escalation of dry weather conditions in several regions of Sri Lanka. The heat index, a measure of perceived temperature, is anticipated to reach cautionary levels in the North-Western, North-Central, and Eastern provinces. Additionally, caution is advised in districts including Mannar, Vavuniya, Monaragala, Rathnapura, Colombo, and Gampaha.

Residents in these areas are urged to take necessary health and safety precautions in response to the escalating temperatures. Despite this, the Meteorology Department forecasts scattered showers or thundershowers in select areas of the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as the Galle and Matara districts during the evening or night.

Director-General of the Met Department, Athula Karunanayake, anticipates sporadic showers beginning March 22; however, he cautioned that these will likely not alleviate the prevailing dry conditions substantially. Moreover, he highlighted the forthcoming period of intense sunlight from April 5 to 15, suggesting a potential increase in heat during this timeframe.

Concurrently, the National Water Supply and Drainage Board has raised concerns, indicating that 18 water supply systems may face shortages due to the prolonged dry spell. Citizens are advised to remain vigilant and conserve water resources amidst the escalating weather conditions.
