Education Ministry Launches Investigation Following Death of 16-Year-Old Schoolboy in Ampara Marathon

The Education Ministry has initiated an investigation in response to a report from the Tirukkovil Education Zone concerning the tragic death of a 16-year-old schoolboy in Ampara. The incident occurred during a marathon race held at Tirukkovil Methodist Central College as part of the school's inter-house sports meet.

The student collapsed during the race and was swiftly transported to Tirukkovil Hospital before being transferred to Akkaraipattu Hospital for further treatment, where he was sadly pronounced dead.

Tensions escalated after some students and residents, alleging inadequate medical care, staged a protest blocking the road outside the hospital. The situation turned violent, prompting the deployment of Police and Special Task Force (STF) personnel to restore order.

Prior to the event, the Education Ministry had issued a circular advising against outdoor activities due to high temperatures. Schools were instructed to refrain from organizing sports events or practices during this period to prioritize student safety.

The investigation aims to ascertain the circumstances leading to the student's death and to ensure appropriate measures are taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
