In Colombo's Central Mail Exchange, employees have commenced a strike due to the ongoing malfunction of two elevators within the eight-story building.
The situation has escalated as the elevator assigned for parcel transportation only functions up to the fifth floor, necessitating manual labor from postal workers to transport items beyond that point.
Joint Convenor of the Joint Postal Trade Union Front, Chinthaka Bandara, emphasized the strain on nearly 3,000 daily occupants.
Postmaster General P. Satkumara clarified that a private firm executed the 25-year-old elevator's renovation a week ago, ensuring adherence to proper procurement processes. The upgraded elevator is now under the management of the responsible company.
