Cabinet Minister Namal Rajapaksa, one of the most influential members in the Cabinet, today said he would not condone the ban on social media.

"I will never condone the blocking of social media. The availability of VPN, just like I’m using now, makes such bans completely useless. I urge the authorities to think more progressively and reconsider this decision," Rajapaksa said.

The Minister's comment, however, came under severe criticism with many pointing out that he shoud raise the matter with his uncle, the President of the country.

Namal Rajapaksa is also the minister in charge of IT anddigital infrastructure.
