The Principal of Trinity College, Kandy, has unreservedly condemned the clash which broke out after the Rugby match between Trinity College, Kandy and S. Thomas' College, Mt. Lavinia, on Saturday.
A group of Trinity College supporters, including a famiy member of a player, has reportedly assaulted the referee of the match after the rival school won the match.
The Principal of Trinity College,, issuing a statement, said, "What transpired after the match was appalling and a blatant violation of decency. The Trinity family joins me in unequivocally condemning this act of hooliganism. Whatever the reasons that may have motivated such behaviour, any such attack on any person, especially the match officials can never be justified. May I assure all Trinitians and the sports loving public that Trinity College will continue to strive towards excellence in holding the high standards of discipline and professionalism. As of now, we have initiated a comprehensive review of the event and whoever, directly or indirectly involved in bringing the good name of Trinity and the game of Rugby to disrepute will be dealt with accordingly.
May I express my sincere thanks to Rev. Fr. Marc Billimoria, the Warden of S. Thomas’ and the Staff for their camaraderie and understanding.
I have already communicated to Mr. Dinka Peiris, the President of the Sri Lanka Society of Rugby Football Referees (SLSRFR), that Trinity College whole heartedly condemns this act of violence and will continue to work very closely with the society in the future. "
