The Opposition defeated the ruling SLPP group in the election to elect members to the Kuliyapitiya East Co-operative Society.

Pohottu's party received 25 votes while the general opposition group received 67 votes. The Cooperative Society has a total of 92 seats.

Several persons have been admitted to the Kuliyapitiya Teaching Hospital and the Narammala Hospital following an altercation between the two groups after the election, police said.

SJB MP Thushara Indunil visited the hospital to look into the condition of those who were injured at the altercation.
