Energy Minister Udaya Gammanpila says that there will be a power cut in mid-February or early March.
The Minister made these remarks in an interview with a foreign news station."As a Cabinet Minister, I must make the country aware of the current situation. The demand for electricity in Sri Lanka is increasing by 8% every year. Therefore, the government should always add new power plants to meet the demand."
"Unfortunately, no new power plants have been added to our power supply since 2014. With the typical dry season from January to April, our power generation is largely dependent on thermal power plants."
"At present, thermal power plants are unable to meet the country's total electricity demand. As of November, 65% of the country's total electricity generation was generated from hydropower," he said.
