Director General of the Sri Lanka Standards Institute Siddhika Senaratne sparked a fresh controversy saying there could be more food items in the market containing cancerous elements.
Speaking to a TV programme, Senaratne said they did not intend to take action against them at this point as such a move could lead to the collapse of some big companies.
"Therefore, we will give these companies more time to correct their actions," she said.
However, Senaratne's comments have created a fierce debate in the social media space with many parties questioning the SLSI's inaction.
This came in the wake of the controversy surrounding the coconut oil containing cancerous elements.
