Despite months of toxic propaganda and numerous campaigns, President's Counsel Saliya Peiris won the Bar Association election a short while ago, with a resounding majority.
Pieris, PC managed to obtained 5162 votes and won the election while his main rival, Kuvera De Zoysa PC, secured only 2807 votes.
This year's election campaign was dubbed by many as one of the worst election campaigns in the history of BASL, mainly due to negative campaigning and hate-mongering.
Peiris, the winning candidate, was often at the receiving end of such negative campaigns which marred the integrity of the legal profession in Sri Lanka.
About 17,000 registered lawyers are eligible to vote at the election, held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m,
