State Minister of Prisons Lohan Ratwatte said he would personally take responsibility for the safety of MP Ranjan Ramanayake who is currently being held at the Angunakolapelessa Prison.
Ratwatte made this remark while responding to questions raised by opposition MPs over Ramanayake's safety in prison. Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, who visited Ramanayake at the Angunakolapelessa prison.
The opposition MPs have requested the government to transfer Ramanayake to the Welikada Prison to ensure his safety.
"The Angunakolapelessa prison is in better condition and has better facilities. Ranjan has already been given a television. We have already moved him into an isolated cell," Ratwatte said.
The opposition MPs claimed that Ramanayake had been assigned to carry out cleaning tasks which include cleaning toilets.
"What if we treat the government MPs in the same way when we come to power? How many of the current ruling party MPs should be cleaning toilets? So, I kindly ask the government to stop these acts of vengeance and allow Ranjan Ramanayake to take part in parliamentary sessions," MP Harin Fernando said.
