Indian High Commissioner Meets President, PM And Foreign Minister After Government's Withdrawal From ECT "Partnership"

February 03, 2021

The Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Gopal Baglay has met the leaders of the government to discuss the latest developments with regard to the Eastern Container Terminal (ECT) at the ColomboPort.

Informed government sources said the High Commissioner had met President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and Foreign Minister Dinesh Gunawardne ayesterday to discuss the complications arising from the government's withdrawal from the proposed deal with the Adani Group of India to develop the ECT.

It is learnt that the Indian government is unhappy with the Sri Lankan government's U-turn on the ECT in the face of trade union actions and growing opposition from some key members of the government. The ECT partnership was a focal point during discussions between Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar and the Sri Lankan government, in Colombo.

The Cabinet, however, has decided to appoint a sub-committee to discuss the development of West Terminal as a joint partnership with India.
