The diplomatic posting given to Samagi Jana Balawegaya National Organiser Tissa Attanayake's daughter, Dulmini Attanayake, has caused a "storm" within the main opposition party.
Dulmini Indrachapa Attanayake, a resident of Melbourne, has been appointed as the Third Secretary to the High Commission of Sri Lanka in Canberra, Australia. Her appointment came a days after Tissa Attanayake was formally appointed the National Organiser of the SJB at the party's inaugural Working Committee meeting.
Tissa Atttanayake defected from the UNP nearly a month before the Presidential eleciton in 2015 and served as the Health Minister in the Rajapaksa administration for a brief period. He is also one of the founding members of the Sajith Premadasa led Samagi Jana Balawegaya.
It is learnt that a number of MPs within the SLB parliamentary group are deeply disappointed with the appointment saying the move indicates a "secret channel" between the Rajapaksa administration and the SJB National Organiser.
Highly placed SJB sources told Asian Mirror that several MPs had already spoken to Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa about the appointment and Attanayake's allegiance to the party. They have requested Premadasa to seek an explanation from Attanayake on this matter and make a statement at the next parliamentary group meeting of the party.
"It is still not clear as to how the Opposition Leader wants to handle the matter," a senior MP told Asian Mirror this morning.
