Former Sri Lankan skipper Arjuna Ranatunga said his former teammates, Aravinda De Silva and Sanath Jayasuriya, coud still train for a couple of days and destroy the English spinners who bamboozled the Sri Lankan batsmen in the recently-concluded Test series.
Ranatunga, a former MP, made this remark while appearing on a TV show last night alongside former cricketers Sanath Jayasuriya, Bandula Warnapura and Avishka Gunawardena.
"Although I've put on a lot of weight now, I think I too can handle them" Ranatunga added describing Jack Leach and Dom Bess as two of the weakest visiting spinners he had ever seen.
He expressed dismay at the Sri Lankan batsmens' inability to handle them in home conditions.
"We got out for spin bowling. How does that happen? We could clearly see that there was a serious issue with regard to their technique. The team has a batting coach coach who is a former foreign player. Even the batting coach did not have a sound technology in his playing days. I know this because I have played against him. So, there are some severe issues surrounding the players and cricket administration in Sri Lanka," he added.
Commenting on Sri Lankan player Kusal Mendis, Ranatunga said, "I have never seen him in real life nor I have spoken to him. But when we see him, we can realize that he is a talented kid. But, there is a serious issue with his 'head' that needs to be resolved. Mental strength is key to play cricket," he added.
