In an interview with a weekend Sinhala newspaper, former Sri Lankan cricketer Shehan Jayasuriya has highlighted some major rifts among national cricketers in Sri Lanka which also highlight glaring issues in the cricket administration.
Jayasuriya retired from Sri Lanka Cricket recently to pursue a cricketing career in the United States. He is expected to migrate to the US with his newly-married wife.
In the interview, Jayasuriya has stated a star cricketer and his wife were instrumental in creating “issues” for him while playing cricket for Sri Lanka.
He has said the wife of the star cricketer has told other players to refrain from engaging with him and this appalling behavior made him deeply frustrated.
He also said plans were afoot to create problems between him and former Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews. Jayasuriya added that the same forces were at play during the recently-concluded Lanka Premier League cricket tournament.
Jayasuriya showed great promise as an all-rounder we when he was first included in the Sri Lankan national team a few years ago. Although he was on the squad for brief stints, he was never given consistent opportunities to perform and cement his position in the team.
