UNP Troubles To Continue As Ranil Shows No Signs Of Leaving Party Leadership By December 31

December 27, 2020

As 2020 comes to an end, former Prime Minister and UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe’s pledge to resign from the party leadership by December 31 2020, has resurfaced on social media.

With only four days away from the last day of the year, Wickremesinghe has shown no signs of leaving the party leadership. This has prompted many political observers to question whether Wickremesinghe’s pledge to leave the party leadership by December is yet another “false promise”.

The UNP Working Committee has reportedly met on Wednesday but had taken no decisions regarding Wickremesinghe’s resignation or the appointment of the UNP national list MP.

However, Ranil Wickremesinghe has reviously declared that all party officials would cease to hold office at the end of this year. It is still not clear whether this includes the party leadership.

Wickremesinghe has retained the UNP leadership for 26 years and led the party to its worst-ever election result in August this year.
