Colombo Archbishop Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith has requested Catholics to take steps to celebrate Christmas this year by giving priority to religious observances only.

Addressing a media briefing this morning (17) Cardinal Ranjith said that due to the risk of the COVID19 epidemic, steps should be taken to celebrate this Christmas with family members whilst avoiding gatherings.

"We must understand that the situation in the Western province is dangerous and there is a risk of the virus being spread to other parts of the country. Therefore, I request all Christians to give priority to religious observances and limit movements and gatherings as much as possible. Given the current circumstances, it is better to try not to visit relatives this year. Have a meaningful Christmas with your family, "said Archbishop Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith.

Areas in the Western province such as Negombo and Wattala, where there is a high concentration of Catholics, are severely affected by the Pandemic
