A dutch monk who was in Sri Lanka on a retreat has been killed by an unindentified group.

Ven. Jinarathana Thera of Netherlands, a 60-year-old monk, was found dead in a lagoon area in Rathgama. Villagers were alarmed that the monk, who would usually come to the village with his begging bowl, had gone missing for a few days and informed the police.

The police said the monk's limbs were tied and a concrete block was tied around his neck. The magisterial inquiry was conducted at the site where his body was recovered.

The exact reason for the murder is not yet established.

His body was taken to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital for postmortem examination.
