Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananda Wijepala has reaffirmed that commemoration events glorifying the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) are strictly prohibited in Sri Lanka, as the group remains a proscribed organization.
The Minister said that any events featuring LTTE symbols, uniforms, or images of its members are not permitted under the law. He clarified that individuals in the Northern Province and elsewhere are allowed to privately commemorate their relatives who died during the war, provided such events do not glorify the LTTE.
“While people have the right to honor their deceased loved ones, we highlighted that the law does not permit celebrations linked to the LTTE,” Minister Wijepala said, warning against misinterpretations of these commemorations.
In addition, the Minister pointed out ongoing efforts to curb drug trafficking in the country. Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Public Security Sunil Watagala officially assumed duties on November 25.
