Thousands of people have thronged outside the house of the witch doctor in Kegalle who claimed he found a cure for COVID19.
It is learnt that those who have gathered outside the residence of the witch doctor are completely disregarding health and safety guidelines set by the state authorities to prevent the spreading of the virus.
“The behavior of the public is appalling. It is obvious that this could lead to a new sub-cluster as people are coming from all over the country. Everyone who contributed to this situation, including media, should be held responsible,” a prominent medical professional said.
Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi came under severe criticism on social media when she visited the witch doctor and took a sip of his “mysterious medicine” indicating that it has got the seal of approval from the government. The ingredients of the medicine still remain a mystery and it is yet to be scientifically or clinically established that this medicine can cure COVID19.
The witch doctor claimed that those who took his medicine would never be infected with COVID19 in their lifetime.
Meanwhile, the Association of Ayurvedic Medical Practitioners claimed that the so-called medicine was produced illegally and Ayurvedic doctors should not be held accountable if the drug causes adverse effects on the public.
The association also stated that the producer of the medicine, a person who claims to be an indigenous doctor, is not registered with the Ayurveda Department.
The Association stated that the concoction used for the so-called cure is not registered with the Yoga Code Committee at the Department of Ayurveda.
The President of the Ayuvedic Doctors’ Union, Dr. Chamal R. Mr. Kulathilake pointed out that such an unregistered drug couldn’t be accepted.
However, Dhammika Bandara, the person who produced the drug, continues to claim that this concoction has been used from the time of King Ravana — a king whose existence cannot be established with historical or archeological evidence.
