Several videos and photographs circulating on Facebook confirmed that a fire has erupted within the Mahara prison although the circumstances surrounding the development are not yet clear.

These videos and photographs are shared by residents in the area and journalists who are currently in the vicinity of the prison premises.

The Police said the Police Special Task Force (STF) has been deployed to control the unrest at the Mahara prison. However, the STF is yet to be called into the prison but the officers have encircled the premises.

At least one prison has died and three others have been injured as prison officers opened fire to bring the unrest under control.

No information is available on whether there are casualties among the officers. Our attempts to contact senior prison authorities to seek a clarification on this matter turned futile. The unrest is still continuing.
