Sri Lanka’s white-bellied sea eagle, which was used for drug trafficking by underworld figure ‘Angoda Lokka’, will be exhibited to the public at the Dehiwala zoo along with other eagles.

The Homagama magistrate previously ordered the Police to hand over the white-bellied sea eagle to the Dehiwala zoo, but it was kept away from the public eye.

The Dehiwala zoo currently remains closed due to the second outbreak of COVID19 in the country, but the hawk-eagle will be exhibited to the public when the zoo reopens.

The drug trafficking hawk-eagle was found in a farm at the Cemetery Road area of Nawalamulla, Meegoda. The bird was used by ‘Angoda Lokka’, a famous underworld figure and a drug trafficker who is believed to have been killed in India.

It is able to carry a considerable weight close to 15kg using its talons.

The Police arrested the individuals who took care of the hawk-eagle at the Cemetery Road farm and the legal proceedings are underway.
