Two days ahead of the launch of Sri Lanka’s local T20 cricket tournament, Lanka Premier League (LPL), the team jersey of Kandy Tuskers has become the newest sensation on social media – but for not the right reasons.

Many have commented across social media platforms that the Kandy Tuskers jersey reminds them of a school cricket team, or a local soft ball cricket team due to its seemingly “humble” look.

Some have even asked on social media whether the jerseys were bought from Pettah, Sri Lanka’s most popular marketplace reputed for its affordable prices.

Sri Lankan batsman Kusal Janith Perera is set to lead the Kandy Tuskers team and several foreign players like Irfan Pathan (India), Rahmanullah Gurbaz (Afghanistan), Brendon Taylor (Zimbabwe), Naveen-ul-Haq (Afghanistan), Munaf Patel (India), Dale Steyn (South Africa) have been included in the squad.

However, all this banter on social media has generated some hype around Sri Lanka’s premier-league tournament, which will predominantly feature the country’s young cricketing talent alongside some international players.

LPL is also one of the rare occasions where Indian and Pakistani cricketers play together in a league cricket tournament. However, none of the current players in the Indian national team have signed up for the tournament.

Sri Lanka’s newly-appointed Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa has thrown his full weight behind the tournament and the league will begin on November 27 in Hambantota. Sri Lanka last held a local T20 tournament with the participation of international players in 2012.
