Former State Minister Ruwan Wijewardena said the UNP was still holding discussions with Sajith Premadasa's alliance to contest the election together.
Addressing a press conference, Wijewardena said both parties should work together to arrive at a solution.
He expressed confidence that the two groups would be able to reach a settlement before the end of the nomination period.
Wijewardena said contesting the election together under the swan symbol was still very much on the cards. "However, we will have to discuss the matter at the party Working Committee."
"Sajith Premadasa is a strong leader within our cap. The MPs who have aligned with him are capable leaders. We don't want to sling mud at them. We want to work together and defeat our common enemy." he added.
