National Freedom Front leader Wimal Weerawansa, Pivithuru Hela Urumaya General Secretary Udaya Gammanpila, UPFA MPs C.B. Rathnayake and Janaka Wakkumbura visited several inmates at the remand prison.
Weerawansa, speaking to the media afterwards, said that former Deputy Minister Vinayagamoorthi Muralitharan alias Karuna Amman and former Minister Tissa Attanayake are being held on unsubstantiated grounds.
Attanayake is being held in remand custody for allegedly inciting racism even though he did not make such an attempt, Weerawansa said.
Karuna was arrested and remanded on charges of not handing over a state vehicle whereas he had written to the Presidential Secretariat about returning the vehicle which he did not use, Weerawansa added.
The government is planning to suppress the opposition before it moves to sign the ETCA with India and introduce the new constitution, Weerawansa said.
The opposition will not be intimidated by the tactics of the government, Weerawansa also claimed.
