The Sri Lankan police says that the post-election period will remain in effect for one week following the declaration of the general election results. Police Spokesman DIG Nihal Thalduwa said that law enforcement is on high alert nationwide to maintain order during this time.
"The post-election period has now begun. No meetings, rallies, or gatherings are permitted in public spaces for the next week," Thalduwa said. "The police are fully mobilized with mobile patrols, intelligence officers on duty, and special security arrangements for certain police divisions."
Thalduwa also said that 581 individuals were arrested for violating election laws during the pre-election period. Of those arrested, 18 were candidates, while the remainder were their supporters. Importantly, no reports of violence have been received.
