The government expressed to it will be paying special attention on expanding sesame cultivation.

Replying to a question raised by parliamentarian Buddhika Pathirana state minister Wasantha Aluvihare said the government has taken measures to introduce high quality seeds and modern technology as well as to provide facilities for the villages sesame cultivation is carried out. 

Sesame cultivation is currently carried out in the districts of Moneragala, Anuradhapura and Hambantota. 

A harvest of a metric ton can be obtained from a hectare of sesame. The annual sesame consumption of the country is currently 10,000 metric tons. The state minister disclosed 2,700 metric tons of sesame were exported last year.
