Vavuniya District Secretary M. B. Pushpakumara said that over 12000 citizens who were displaced by the civil war have applied for permanent housing.

The stock includes applications of people fled to India during war who now have returned to their villages and living in relatives’ and temporary houses, District Secretary said.

He made this observation to media when enquired regarding displaced citizens submitting applications requesting permanent housing.

“12000 displaced citizens of Vavuniya have applied for permanent housing under Indian Housing Project. Funds have been allocated to construct 850 houses by now. There are 60 families who returned from India among them”, Pushpakumara said.

“Therefore, funds have been allocated for 357 houses from Vavuniya town, 238 houses from Vavuniya South, 102 houses from Vavuniya North, and 153 houses for Venkadi Settikulam of Vavuniya”, he added.

However, displaced citizens of Vavuniya said that they were facing a different kind of war since they had no permanent houses, or jobs, although the civil war was over.
