Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa today slammed the government for what he called utter falsifications on foreign debt, adding that the media will also be afraid to report the truth in lieu of the recent letter sent by the Media Ministry Secretary Nimal Bopage.

Saying that the UNP government is increasing the burden of foreign debt while doing nothing in turn for the country, Rajapaksa said that it had borrowed US $ 1 billion within the last six weeks.

"What have they done with it?" Nothing!" he said.

The media, he said, will be apprehensive in reporting these as the government's press freedom was articulated to the letter in Nimal Bopage's letter, Rajapaksa quipped.

"Try to report it without using wrong words, or you might be sued" he said.

Bopage sent a letter to the media recently, saying that using the term "Joint Opposition" was illegal.
