A group of senior members of Sri Lanka Freedom Party has proposed to give an important position of SLFP to former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

The decision will be presented to Party Leader Maithripala Sirisena in near future.

The decision has been made since Rajapaksas have become a major factor in country’s politics. Without Rajapaksas involvement, SLFP future victories might be affected, the senior members of SLFP have considered.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa has been chosen over Mahinda Rajapaksa based on several factors, sources said. Gotabaya Rajapaksa has much less corruption accusations than his elder brother and is widely recognized for his pivotal role in ending the civil war and carrying out urban development.
