The People’s Movement against the Port City says that a public petition will be signed against resuming the Port City Project.

The petition will be handed over to President Maithripala Sirisena in near future, the co-convener of the movement Rev. Sarath Iddamalgoda said.

Coastal environment will be severely affected as a result of the construction activities of the Port City project, he further said.

Rev. Iddamalgoda noted the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe clearly promised that the project will be halted under his government during the Presidential Election campaign in 2014. Resuming the project is a violation of people’s trust put on his word, he pointed out.
