In an apparent reference to the 'Joint Opposition', Minister Susil Premajayantha today slammed 'certain people' for making various statements on the 2015 General Election, adding that the true story of the UPFA election campaign is known to only him and Anura Priyadarshana Yapa.
Speaking at the ceremony to mark Minister Mahinda Amaraweera's assumption of duties as UPFA General Secretary, Premajayantha asked the 'certain people' not to make statements about matters unknown to them.
"If I were to correct them, they will end up in difficulties" he added.
Premajayantha said that the UPFA was able to win 95 seats only because it contested the election as one party under the betel leaf symbol.
Before the nomination period, there were serious speculation that the UPFA group supporting former President Mahinda Rajapaksa would seek to contest under a different party if Rajapaksa was not given nominations. Premajayantha and Anura Yapa, the then General Secretaries of the UPFA and the SLFP, were instrumental in giving Rajapaksa nomination from the UPFA.
Premajayantha also pointed out that UPFA has only four members at present, namely the SLFP, Sri Lanka Mahajana Party, Mahajana Eksath Peramuna and the Desha Vimukthi Janatha Party. All other parties came to electoral agreements either with the UPFA or the SLFP before an election, he pointed out.
Premajayantha also said that the UPFA won all elections except the 2015 Presidential and General Elections. He also added that he will not speak of the circumstances which led to these two defeats until he retires from politics.
