Lasith Malinga has made a request from Sri Lanka Cricket to allow him step down as captain of the Sri Lanka T20 team, citing knee injuries.

Malinga dropped out of the Asia Cup T20 series after Sri Lanka's first match due to the knee injury.

Sri Lanka is to play the first T20 World Cup match on March 17. The team is scheduled to fly for India for the tournament tomorrow.
