The 'Joint Opposition' today requested the IGP to ensure an impartial and proper investigation into the accident in Rajagiriya involving a vehicle of Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka.

Sending a letter to the IGP N.K. Illangakoon, several 'Joint Opposition' MPs asked if the police had launched an investigation into the accident, which caused serious injuries to a motorcyclist.

The MPs asked if the police inspected the CCTV footage near the location of the accident and if the police granted a justifiable opportunity to those who had made statements to the police. The law should be equal to all, the MPs said.

They also pointed out that eyewitnesses had alleged that Minister Ranawaka had been driving the vehicle at the time of the accident, although a driver had surrendered to the police claiming it was he who drove the vehicle at the time. A youth who had followed the vehicle had seen that it was the minister who was driving, the MPs said. The suspect who surrendered, was also released on bail after being producing at the court,” they said.

The 'Joint Opposition' MPs also said the culprits had fled the scene without reporting the accident.
