The Jaffna University authorities have disowned the planned Code of Ethics regarding the dress code for the students, following the threat of protests and wide media coverage to its earlier decision.

"University of Jaffna is a multicultural university and all communities have the right to dress in their traditional attire" the Council of the Jaffna University said in a statement, tucked away in small print newspapers.

It also said that the earlier directive did not have the approval of the council and the Vice Chancellor.

University of Jaffna's administration earlier decided to implement a code of ethics for the university students and staff.

Accordingly, wearing denims and T-shirts was to be banned during the lectures, women were to wear saris on Fridays and students and academic staff were prohibited to enter lecture rooms wearing beards.
